True Love

Continuing with the Princess Bride theme...

Inigo Montoya: "We need a miracle, it's very important."
Miracle Max: "Look, I'm retired. And besides, why would you want someone the king's stinking son fired. I might kill whoever you wanted me to miracle."
Inigo Montoya: "He's already dead."
Miracle Max: "He is huh, I'll take a look, come on in."

Yesterday I wrote about how Scripture tells us that we are not "mostly dead," but by nature we are entirely spiritually dead.  It's important to understand this, because until we understand our absolute helplessness, we will continue to try to make things right with God by our own efforts.

But when we realize that we are truly dead, that we are helpless, God has us exactly where He wants us. It is for the helpless, the dead in sin, that Jesus came.

But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." (Matthew 9:12-13)

Or as Robert Farrar Capon put it...

Jesus came to raise the dead. The only qualification for the gift of the Gospel is to be dead. You don’t have to be smart. You don’t have to be good. You don’t have to be wise. You don’t have to be wonderful. You just have to be dead. That’s it.

In the movie, Miracle Max was willing and able to help Wesley because he wanted to come back from the dead for "True Love."

In reality, it is because of God's "True Love" for the dead that leads to resurrection.

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:4-7)

True Love.

Love for those who are unable to pay Him back, love for those who are by nature spiritual dead, blind to the things of God, and enemies of God.

Love for you.

Inigo Montoya said, "We need a miracle.." and so we do.

That miracle's name is Jesus.
